Bill Tompkins Bill Tompkins is an accomplished business leader with extensive experience in corporate strategy, economic development, and market transformation. With a career spanning leadership roles in Fortune 500 companies, economic development organizations, and consulting, he has built a reputation for driving growth, forging strategic partnerships, and positioning organizations for long-term success.

As President & CEO of the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC), Bill has played a pivotal role in strengthening the county’s economic competitiveness. Under his leadership, MCEDC has helped attract more than $8 billion in venture capital, supported the creation and retention of over 16,000 jobs, and expanded Montgomery County’s footprint in key sectors like life sciences, technology, and cybersecurity. He also led the organization’s pandemic recovery efforts, successfully deploying $22 million in relief funds to support businesses across the county.

Before leading MCEDC, Bill held senior executive roles in corporate strategy, marketing, and business transformation. As Corporate VP and General Manager at Eastman Kodak, he managed a $700 million global division, overseeing market expansion and strategic growth. At The Washington Post, he directed all aspects of marketing, product development, and revenue strategy, shaping the brand’s positioning during a pivotal time in the media industry. He also served as President of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, driving digital strategy and new revenue models for Black-owned publications nationwide.

Bill’s leadership extends beyond the corporate world. He has provided strategic advisory services to private sector organizations, investment firms, and nonprofit entities, helping them navigate change and seize new growth opportunities. His ability to bring clarity to complex business challenges—whether in corporate, nonprofit, oreconomic development settings—has been a defining strength throughout his career.

Looking ahead, Bill remains committed to leveraging his expertise in business strategy, economic development, and market transformation to drive impact and growth.

He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was a General Motors Fellow and Treasurer of the African American Student Union, and a BA in Economics from Tufts University. He continues to be an active advocate for economic and business growth, leadership development, and fostering inclusive opportunities in the DMV region and beyond.
