An uplifting celebration of our local community from a global perspective!
An all-star D.C. cast courageously invites you into their own worlds. Their riveting stories combine with the voices of caregivers, medical professionals, and everyday people to create a deeply personal and universally resonant theatrical event.
Featuring a powerhouse DC cast including Jabari Exum; Billie Krishawn; Raghad Makhlouf; William T. Newman, Jr.; Tuyết Thị Phạm; Susan Rome; and Tom Story. The play showcases original music composed and played live by Exum, the Lead Djembe player (African Drummer) for Marvel's Black Panther 1 & 2.
“The Art of Care reconnects us to the deep ancient connections between art and medicine, by weaving a tapestry of the ensemble’s own deeply moving and intimate personal stories about care with live music and physically expressive movement,” explained Goldman. “As a society, we struggle to talk about mortality and caregiving. The play celebrates the capacity of art and storytelling to be forces of care and healing, reminding us why it remains so necessary to come together in a communal setting to bear witness to each other’s humanity. The project asks all of us: ‘Can we begin to imagine a world where we put care for one another at the center?’” -Derek Goldman, director
The Art of Care is dedicated to Dan & Gloria Logan and sponsored by the Revada Foundation of the Logan Family of Virginia, Georgetown University, Kaiser Permanente, and Partners Circle Visionaries the Steinglass Family Fund, Champions Dr. Bill & Evelyn Braithwaite, Believers Frank & Emily Vogl, Advocates Steven Clay & Mike Smith, Mimi Conway & Dennis Houlihan, Ed Grossman & Rochelle Stanfield, Craig Pascal, Stephen Stern & Margaret Hahn Stern, and Rosa Wiener.

“A tremendously heartfelt and affecting world premiere. Conceived and directed by Derek Goldman, the show is almost entirely crafted from the perspectives of its seven-member ensemble, whose radical vulnerability is its marvelous lifeblood. The show also makes a persuasive argument about the equivalence of art and care. Both encourage recognition of another person’s perspective. Any time, but especially now, what could be more valuable?” The Washington Post
“Rich and empathetic! Those looking for a break from ubiquitous election discourse can find a welcome reprieve at Mosaic Theater Company’s production The Art of Care. Intimate, revelatory moments unfurl between the cast. Their trust in and love for one another is immersive. When one actor can no longer speak through their grief, another takes up the helm and continues the story. They hold each other, and cry with one another, and laugh, too. In this way, The Art of Care feels truly special. May we all find the courage to so readily take others into our care!” Broadway World
“★★★★★ A shining light! A must-see moment of theatrical history! The stories and their unique presentation are formulated to make you feel connected, to elevate you, and to make you think about a better way of life. Each actor delivers strong moments of humor, emotion and connection with their other cast members.” TheatreBloom
“An extraordinary experience of communal connection. Deeply affecting! At a time when the body politic is greatly in need of consoling, The Art of Care is as much a moving performance as it is a public health service. It models in real time what it could mean for human community if the art of theater were itself an act of care.” DC Theater Arts
“Uplifting the joy and sacrifice inherent in the act of caring for one another … it chooses to remind us of the personal power that great care can hold.” MD Theatre Guide
“★★★★ Mosaic's The Art of Care is exactly what we need. The endearing ensemble of Mosaic's "The Art of Care" delivers a frank, graceful, and refreshing expression of care and empathy. On the whole, remarkably upbeat given the subjects at hand, The Art of Care extracts meaningful truth from its combination of sources and formats. And the artists indeed render care in bravely sharing intimate aspects of their humanity so that we might connect so directly with them, others, and ourselves.” Metro Weekly
The Art of Care is a deeply intimate play, blending artists’ lived experiences with the universal theme of caring for people. What does care look like? Seven local artists explore what that deep, intimate and vulnerable bond looks like, as they try to give shape to what it means to care for someone through the words of health professionals, family members, and loved ones. The result is a fragile, emotional web of love and loss that will resonate with audience members willing to let these stories touch them deeply.” The Hill is Home
“The Art of Care was more than a performance; it was a catharsis. It asked us not only to witness but to participate and acknowledge that caring for one another might just be the most powerful story we can share.” The 51st State
